Jakarta - The Whoosh high-speed train is evolving into a vital gateway channeling international tourists directly into the heart of West Java's tourism circuit. During the recent year-end holidays, the service witnessed a pronounced influx of passengers from Malaysia, who used the train primarily to reach holiday destinations beyond Jakarta. This shift underscores the railway's function in decentralizing tourism and spreading economic benefits to regional areas.

Data from PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) confirms that Malaysian travelers were the most significant group among international users. They made up 53% of the 13,000 foreign passengers during the Nataru period, equating to 7,000 individuals. On peak days, between 750 and 1,000 Malaysians boarded the train, heading not just to Bandung but to various scenic spots in the province.

Eva Chairunisa, General Manager Corporate Secretary of KCIC, highlighted the specific destinations attracting these visitors. "Malaysian tourists are leveraging the year-end holiday to vacation in Bandung, as well as visit a number of natural tourism destinations in West Java such as Lembang, Ciwidey, and various other destinations," she stated. This pattern indicates a deliberate choice to use Whoosh for efficient access to cooler highland areas and natural attractions.

The preference for Whoosh among Malaysian tourists is well-established. Cumulative figures from its inaugural run in 2023 up to 2025 show that approximately 294,000 Malaysian citizens have traveled on it. They represent the overwhelming majority of the 394,000 total international passengers, proving the service's entrenched popularity with this demographic.

The holiday season amplified overall ridership. KCIC sold around 225,000 tickets for the Nataru period, with daily passenger numbers soaring 20-30% above the normal range to between 22,000 and 24,000. Even with this general increase, the consistent and substantial proportion of Malaysian riders remained a standout feature of the passenger mix.

To manage the seasonal surge and ensure a good traveler experience, KCIC is actively promoting advance planning. The operator advises all passengers to book their tickets early through the official Whoosh app or website. This call is particularly relevant for international tourists needing to coordinate complex travel itineraries involving flights and train journeys.

The phenomenon of Malaysian tourists using Whoosh as a gateway signifies a maturation of Indonesia's integrated transport-tourism strategy. It successfully captures international arrivals in Jakarta and directs them swiftly to secondary cities, alleviating congestion in the capital while promoting regional economic development through tourism.

Looking forward, this trend presents opportunities for further collaboration between transport providers, tour operators, and local governments in West Java. Enhancing integrated travel packages and promotions targeting neighboring ASEAN countries could solidify this successful model and replicate it for other visitor markets.
