Jakarta – In a concerted effort to protect consumers from price volatility during Ramadan, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered regional teams to conduct daily market inspections. Tomsi Tohir led a crucial coordination meeting in Jakarta on Monday, focusing on practical steps to keep staple foods within reach of all citizens, especially with the Eid al-Fitr holiday on the horizon.
The urgency of the meeting was prompted by data showing a gradual increase in the prices of essential commodities like red chili, chicken, and beef in several regions. The Ministry's primary concern is the burden this places on household budgets during a period of increased consumption. The directive is clear: regional governments must act now to prevent prices from spiraling out of control before the holiday season.
A key strategy discussed involves direct, daily communication and inspection by TPID members within markets. Tomsi emphasized that understanding the ground-level reality is essential for effective intervention. He urged officials to engage with market champions and stakeholders to collaboratively find solutions that can quickly lower prices for end consumers, moving beyond administrative oversight to active problem-solving.

A significant part of the strategy involves bolstering the supply of affordable rice. The Secretary General explicitly called upon the State Logistics Agency to increase its distribution of market operation rice in areas experiencing price hikes. By injecting more government-subsidized rice into the market, the aim is to provide a cheaper alternative for consumers and force commercial prices to adjust downwards, aligning with the Maximum Retail Price.
This intervention is seen as critical for upholding the social contract between the government and its citizens. Tomsi framed the effort as a core responsibility of the public apparatus to ensure that regulations designed to protect people are effective. He cautioned against a passive acceptance of price increases, urging officials to view any deviation from the price cap as a failure of their duty to serve the public.
The overarching goal, as articulated by Tomsi, is to navigate the entire Ramadan period without significant price disruptions. Success, he noted, would mean that families can prepare for and celebrate Lebaran without the financial stress of exorbitant food costs. He envisioned that if current efforts are sustained, the 2026 Eid could be remembered as a celebration marked by exceptional price stability.
The directive was issued during a multi-agency meeting that included representatives from the Ministry of Housing, the Central Statistics Agency, and the Presidential Staff Office. This collaborative approach underscores the government's comprehensive commitment to ensuring that the principles of affordability and accessibility are realized for every Indonesian citizen during this important religious and cultural period.
