National Quality Month 2024: Standardization For Sustainable Economic Transformation

Thursday, 21 Nov 2024

To achieve the vision of Indonesia Gold 2045 and support an economic growth target of 8%, the Indonesian government is actively promoting sustainable development as outlined in the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045.

"The transformation of Indonesia's economy into a sustainable green economy must balance economic, social, and environmental aspects, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, the Indonesia Gold 2045 vision, and the goal of reaching Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060," stated Kukuh S. Achmad, Head of the National Standardization Agency (BSN), during the opening of National Quality Month (BMN) and the Indonesia Standard and Conformity Assessment Summit 2024 in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/11/2024).

This year, National Quality Month 2024 carries the theme "Standardization for Sustainable Economic Growth." This theme was chosen because standardization plays a crucial role in driving economic transformation that focuses not only on short-term growth but also on long-term sustainability. In an increasingly competitive global context, implementing standards can enhance the quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of Indonesian products in international markets.

To support efforts in reducing carbon footprints and achieving NZE, the government has adopted five main principles: increasing the use of renewable energy (EBT); reducing fossil energy; promoting electric vehicles in the transportation sector; enhancing electricity use in households and industries; and utilizing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

In support of these initiatives, BSN has established four SNI related to CCS, including:

1.SNI ISO 27914:2017 Carbon dioxide capture, transportation, and geological storage — Geological storage.

2.SNI ISO/TR 27915:2017 focuses on the capture, transportation, and geological storage of carbon dioxide, detailing methods for quantification and verification.

3. SNI ISO/TR 27918:2018 addresses lifecycle risk management for integrated carbon capture and storage projects.

4. SNI ISO/TR 27923:2022 covers the injection operations, infrastructure, and monitoring related to carbon capture, transportation, and geological storage.

As of October 31, 2024, BSN has established 15,432 SNI standards that support various strategic sectors, including economic transformation, sustainability, and national competitiveness.

The National Quality Month 2024 is a significant event, marking ten years since the enactment of Law Number 20 of 2014 on Standardization and Conformity Assessment. Over the past decade, achievements in standardization have greatly contributed to national development.

To support the Free Nutritious Lunch program initiated by President Prabowo, BSN continues to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and educate the public on the importance of quality and food safety standards. By October 2024, 775,763 SMEs with 910,181 products have received the SNI Bina UMK certification, facilitating market access and promoting economic sustainability.

The activities for the 2024 National Quality Month organized by BSN and stakeholders include the Indonesia Standard and Conformity Assessment Summit, Indonesia Standardization Youth Summit, Herudi Technical Committee Award, SNI Award Night, SNI Expo, and various seminars, workshops, and talk shows.
