Indonesia ranks fifth in the world for premature births, with about 657,700 cases each year out of approximately 4.5 million total births. In response to this situation, RSIA Bunda Jakarta, a national referral center for mothers and children, is enhancing its healthcare services to provide comprehensive and holistic care for premature infants. Coinciding with World Prematurity Day, celebrated on November 17, RSIA Bunda Jakarta is also educating the public on the importance of proper care and monitoring for the development of premature babies.
Dr. I.G.A.N. Partiwi, a pediatric specialist at RSIA Bunda Jakarta, known as Dr. Tiwi, stated that premature babies often face higher health risks and require more intensive and targeted medical care. The success of treating premature infants heavily relies on timely medical interventions, including monitoring vital organ functions and ongoing physical growth.
Every stage of a premature baby's development, from NICU care to growth monitoring, must be approached with careful and multidisciplinary medical strategies to ensure optimal growth and minimize long-term complications.
To provide the best healthcare for premature infants, RSIA Bunda Jakarta has a specially designed Neonatology Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that caters to the complex medical needs of these babies. A key feature of the NICU is the Family Integrated Care for Premature Babies (FICare), which allows parents to be actively involved in their baby's care and recovery process.
Premature babies mostly go to the NICU, where they are separated from their parents, especially their mothers, who should care for them and provide direct breastfeeding. The FICare program at RSIA Bunda was created to address this issue. Parents can care for their babies in the NICU with guidance from medical staff. This ensures that the basic needs for the baby's survival and growth are met, said Dr. Tiwi.
