Kemenperin Rejects Apple Investment Worth USD 100 Million

Monday, 25 Nov 2024

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, has announced that the Indonesian government has rejected Apple's investment plan amounting to USD 100 million (approximately IDR 1.58 trillion) intended for the next two years.

This rejection is based on the belief that the proposed investment is disproportionate compared to Apple's investments in other countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand.

"We believe it is unfair for this investment to be only USD 100 million, especially considering that countries like India and Vietnam receive more," Febri stated on Sunday, November 24.

Apple had previously proposed this investment to establish a product development center, the Apple Academy in Bali and Jakarta, as well as a manufacturing facility for AirPods Max components. However, Kemenperin also noted that Apple's commitment to invest IDR 271 billion for the period of 2020-2023 has not yet been realized. Consequently, the government has postponed the certification of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) and import permits for the iPhone 16 series until this commitment is fulfilled.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized that Apple's proposed investment must have a significant impact on Indonesia. In addition to increasing the investment amount, the government expects the integration of local industries into Apple's Global Value Chain (GVC).

"This investment must not only be substantial in terms of value but also fair and positively impactful for Indonesia," he asserted.

As a precautionary measure, Kemenperin plans to revise the TKDN regulations for electronic products. This policy aims to enhance investment transparency and support the growth of the domestic HKT (handphone, computer, tablet) industry. This initiative aligns with the Prabowo-Gibran administration's target of achieving an 8% economic growth rate.
