Sony Is Preparing To Launch A New Handheld Console, Poised To Compete With Offerings From Nintendo And Microsoft

Thursday, 28 Nov 2024

Sony is reportedly in the process of developing a new portable console that will allow users to play PlayStation 5 (PS5) games directly without the need for a Wi-Fi connection.

According to a report from Bloomberg.com on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, this console is still in the early stages of development and is expected to take several years before it is ready for launch, should Sony decide to proceed with its release.

The handheld gaming market is currently dominated by Nintendo, which plans to launch a successor to its Switch console next year.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is also working on a prototype for a portable Xbox, although Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has indicated that this device will also require several years before it becomes available.

Previously, Sony released the PlayStation Portal, an eight-inch device that allows users to stream PS5 games via the cloud.

However, this new device aims to provide a different experience by enabling direct gameplay of PS5 titles without Wi-Fi, making it more appealing to users and broadening Sony's reach.

Although Sony has previously launched portable consoles such as the PS Vita and PlayStation Portable, both of which have long been discontinued, the introduction of this new device signifies Sony's efforts to re-enter the increasingly competitive portable gaming market, which now features products like Valve's Steam Deck and Asus's ROG Ally.

The arrival of this new handheld console from Sony is viewed as a significant step towards offering a more flexible gaming experience for users. However, the uncertainty surrounding its launch timeline leaves many awaiting further confirmation from Sony.
