Sports Have Become An Integral Part Of The Lifestyle Of Indonesia's Upper Middle Class

Thursday, 06 Feb 2025

The majority of the Indonesian population has now integrated sports into their lifestyle. However, many still prioritize activities that are easy and convenient to perform at home or in their local environment.

A recent report by Populix titled “Understanding Indonesia’s Sports Trends” indicates that out of 1,030 respondents surveyed, 94 percent reported exercising regularly at least once a week. While most individuals engage in exercise independently, a small portion of respondents are also part of sports communities. These communities vary, encompassing both team sports and individual activities such as gym workouts, cycling, swimming, or running. This reflects the seriousness with which the public approaches sports as a lifestyle choice.

Morning Exercise Habits in Residential Areas

The majority of respondents (68%) exercise only once or twice a week, while 23% claim to engage in physical activity more regularly, exercising three to four times a week, and 6% exercise daily. When asked about the most suitable time for exercise, 58% preferred the morning, followed by 32% who favored the afternoon. In terms of location, a significant portion (42%) feels comfortable exercising at home, while 23% prefer exercising in nearby fields. This indicates a tendency among the population to choose activities that are both comfortable and easily accessible.

According to this survey, 90% of respondents reported exercising outside of formal sports facilities. In terms of popularity, running leads this category with 44%, followed by cycling at 32%, swimming at 27%, and gym workouts at 26%. Rhythmic sports such as Zumba (14%), Pilates (11%), gymnastics (9%), and Poundfit (5%) are also popular choices.

On the other hand, 84% of respondents indicated a preference for sports that require a field. The majority (56%) reported playing badminton, followed by football (38%), futsal (33%), and basketball (24%). Additionally, tennis (17%), golf (15%), and table tennis (9%) are also included in their preferences.

The average respondent reported engaging in four different types of sports, encompassing both those that require a designated field and those that can be performed without such facilities. This indicates that the community is not limited to a single type of sport, as stated by Indah Tanip, VP of Research at Populix. This finding was derived from a survey conducted in November 2024, involving 1,030 respondents, primarily from the millennial and Generation Z demographics. The majority of participants belong to the working class, with marital statuses ranging from single to married with children. The socioeconomic backgrounds of the respondents are varied, yet predominantly consist of individuals from the upper-middle class.
