The Indonesian government is actively working to revitalize Kertajati Airport in Majalengka, West Java, which is currently experiencing low passenger traffic.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that the government is considering ways to enhance the connectivity of Kertajati Airport for the surrounding communities in West Java.
This initiative had been attempted in the past, yet connectivity remains a significant issue for Kertajati Airport to this day.
"We certainly hope that the connectivity to the airport improves, making it more accessible for the public, especially those coming from Bandung, Cirebon, Majalengka, Subang, and nearby areas. As traffic increases, the potential for passenger numbers will also rise," AHY explained during a meeting at the Kemang Pratama Bridge in Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
AHY mentioned that the government plans to optimize the airport's functions for Umrah and Hajj travel, with the expectation of increasing passenger numbers and attracting more airlines to Kertajati Airport.
He further added that there are plans to develop Kertajati Airport into an Aeropark area, which would serve as an integrated aviation industrial zone connected to the airport.
"This aims to create an integrated ecosystem that also serves as a hub for the aviation industry, which indeed requires thorough planning across various aspects," he noted.
Additionally, AHY indicated that Kertajati Airport will focus on Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services for aircraft and helicopters. He mentioned that the government is still in the planning phase regarding this matter.
"The hope is to also develop the surrounding area, ultimately uncovering local economic potential. There are numerous factors and aspects that we need to study in greater detail and with more technical precision before making any comprehensive decisions or policies," he concluded.
