Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025

The seventh President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), along with the envoy of President Prabowo Subianto, paid their final respects to the late Pope Francis at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

They stood in prayer before the casket, witnessed by several cardinals and nuns. This moment took place at 07:30 local time, while a mass was held at St. Peter's Square at 10:00 local time. Accompanying Jokowi as Prabowo's envoy were Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono, Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai, and Ignasius Jonan, the Chairman of the Committee for the Reception of Pope Francis in Indonesia 2024.

They were part of a gathering of over 50 world leaders and 10 monarchs, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prince William of the United Kingdom, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as the Kings and Queens of Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, and Monaco. Jokowi was appointed as an envoy due to his previous meeting with the late Pope Francis during his presidency. 'Mr. Jokowi was the president at that time who met directly when Pope Francis visited Jakarta, thus Mr. Prabowo felt that his status was that of a head of state at that time,' stated Ahmad Muzani, Chairman of the MPR RI and Secretary General of the Gerindra Party, at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday, April 25.
