Colorectal cancer cases in young age groups, including Gen Z, have increased significantly.
Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, IPB University, Sulpiana, said that the threat of colorectal cancer can be caused by genetic factors or unhealthy lifestyle factors.
According to Sulpiana, genetic factors play a role in the occurrence of colorectal cancer, especially in individuals with a family history of cancer.
"An unhealthy lifestyle, including lack of physical activity and an unbalanced diet, also contributes significantly to increasing the risk of colorectal cancer at a young age," he said.
The Biomedical Histology lecturer added that early symptoms of colorectal cancer include changes in bowel movements, blood in the stool, pain or cramps in the abdomen, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue.
As an early detection step, Sulpiana suggests screening with a colonoscopy before the age of 40 in individuals with a history of colorectal cancer in the family or individuals with a history of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Health technology and applications can also help Gen Z monitor their health and detect the risk of colorectal cancer, as well as provide information on symptoms and risk factors for colorectal cancer.
He also emphasized the importance of implementing a healthy diet, increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, and high-fiber foods, and reducing red meat and processed food intake.
"Don't forget, do regular physical activity to maintain ideal body weight and gut health," he concluded.
