Lifestyle Changes Can Assist In Alleviating Menopause Symptoms, According To UVA Experts

, 04 May 2025

For many women, the symptoms of menopause can complicate daily life, affecting both their professional and personal relationships. An expert suggests that some relief can be achieved through simple lifestyle changes. Instead of immediately resorting to medication, managing menopause symptoms can begin with straightforward adjustments to diet and exercise routines. "We really need to focus on this," stated Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, founder and director of the UVA Midlife Health Center.

Menopause symptoms can disrupt women's lives both physically and mentally. Pinkerton noted that diet and exercise can help alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and more. "It may help prevent or reduce hot flashes," Pinkerton remarked. "However, engaging in overly strenuous exercise can lead to increased sweating, so women must find a balance." Achieving that balance also involves making appropriate food choices. Estrogen, a hormone that helps regulate cholesterol levels, decreases during menopause. Pinkerton indicated that adhering to a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables can be beneficial. "There is no one-size-fits-all diet for all women," Pinkerton explained.

"During menopause, the body requires extra attention due to metabolic changes." Implementing lifestyle changes is not always straightforward. Pinkerton mentioned that many women struggle to find time for themselves, but having a plan can make a significant difference. "If women entering perimenopause can say, 'I need to take time for myself,' they can reduce health risks," Pinkerton concluded.
