Stroke Can Attack Young People, These Are The Causative Factors

It turns out that stroke does not only attack the elderly. According to Dr. Roslan Yusni Hasan, SpBS, a neurosurgery specialist from Mayapada Hospital, stroke can also be experienced by young age groups. Cases of stroke in young adults (aged 18-49 years) are recorded at around 17 out of 100,000 people. Meanwhile, in children over 28 months old, the figure reaches 13 out of 100,000. Dr. Roslan, at the Symposium Recent Update of Neuroscience & Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, Saturday (3/5/2025) explained that the causes of stroke in young people generally come from disorders or health problems that have been previously present. "Examples of hemorrhagic stroke cases (ruptured blood vessels in the brain), usually begin with abnormalities such as arteriovenous (AVM), aneurysm (widening of blood vessels), or cavernoma (blood vessel abnormalities)," he explained. In addition, other factors that trigger stroke at a young age are drug abuse, which is also an important risk variable in this case. Meanwhile, in ischemic stroke (blood vessel blockage), the cause can be due to heart disease, blood vessel disorders, to hypercoagulability, which is blood that clots easily. According to Dr. Roslan, an unhealthy lifestyle also triggers ischemic stroke in young people. Some habits that worsen the risk include smoking, consuming illegal drugs, high blood pressure (hypertension), lack of physical activity, and rarely exercising. "If you rarely exercise, it can be seen from your fat body, and this is not healthy. But often people get body shaming," he added. On a separate occasion, Prof. DR. dr. Satyanegara, SpBS, also a neurosurgery specialist from Mayapada Hospital, highlighted the eating patterns of today's young people as one of the causes of the increased risk of stroke. "Fried foods, fatty foods are all abundant in today's foods but are not balanced with a healthy life," said Prof. Satyanegara at Mayapada Hospital, South Jakarta, Saturday (3/5).
