Wednesday, 21 May 2025

The kidneys are vital organs that work non-stop to filter waste and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.

Without realizing it, the habit of consuming certain drinks can burden and slowly damage kidney function. Some drinks that seem harmless can actually accelerate kidney damage if consumed regularly.

The damage may not be immediately visible, but the impact will only be seen several years later. Quoting the Times of India, here are drinks that can damage the kidneys, stop consuming them immediately.

1. Soda

Soda, especially the black one, may taste very good. However, this drink is very dangerous for the kidneys. This drink contains phosphoric acid with a sharp taste.

A study explains that high intake of phosphoric acid will increase the risk of kidney damage. This drink also contains sugar and artificial sweeteners that damage kidney function.

Alternative: Instead of drinking soda, it is better to consume water mixed with cucumber, mint leaves, and lemon to hydrate the body without harm. Coconut water is also a drink that is healthy for the kidneys.

2. Packaged Juice

Many packaged fruit drinks contain little real fruit juice and more added sugar, preservatives, and artificial flavors.

High sugar content can lead to insulin spikes, high blood pressure, and eventually chronic kidney problems. Even drinks labeled "no added sugar" use substitutes that are also bad for the kidneys.

3. Alcohol

While drinking a small amount of alcohol occasionally may not cause immediate harm, regular alcohol consumption makes the kidneys work harder.

4. Energy Drinks

Energy drinks promise to maintain stamina. However, the contents of these canned drinks are very dangerous.

These drinks contain high amounts of caffeine, added sugar, and synthetic vitamins that overstimulate the kidneys. High caffeine content can cause dehydration, reducing blood flow to the kidneys, especially if consumed regularly.

5. Isotonic Drinks

Sports drinks or commonly known as isotonic drinks contain sodium, sugar, and artificial colors that can harm the kidneys if consumed continuously.

Indeed, this drink is widely consumed during exercise because it is considered to be hydrating. However, this drink is actually dangerous for the kidneys.
