OpenAI Launches Codex, A Sophisticated AI Tool To Help Programmers

Friday, 23 May 2025

OpenAI officially launched Codex, a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool to help programmers. Codex is able to write code, fix bugs and run tests.

Codex is included in the category of AI agents, not just chatbots. Unlike chatbots, AI agents like Codex can perform more complex tasks.

This agent can interact directly with software and internet services. In fact, it is able to run complex commands such as ordering food or processing data from various online sources.

Quoted from The Straits Times, Monday (5/19/2025), in an announcement on May 16, OpenAI stated that Codex can handle several tasks at once. This shows the multitasking capabilities of the tool.

Starting on that date, Codex is available to ChatGPT Pro customers with a subscription fee of US$200 (around Rp3.2 million) per month. OpenAI also plans to present Codex in other paid services.

In addition, OpenAI is reportedly considering the acquisition of Windsurf, another AI programming tool. The acquisition value is estimated to reach around US$3 billion (around Rp49 trillion).

If the acquisition goes through, it would be OpenAI’s largest ever and could potentially add thousands of users to the tech sector, which is increasingly relying on automated programming tools.
