Minister Of Communication And Digital Invites Philippines To Strengthen Collaboration To Develop Ethical AI

Tuesday, 17 Jun 2025

Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between Indonesia and the Philippines in facing the era of digital transformation, especially related to digital governance and the development of ethical artificial intelligence (AI).

According to her, as two dynamic democracies and economies that continue to grow in Southeast Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines have a shared vision for a safe, ethical, and human-centered digital future.

"We must welcome the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) with a collaborative spirit, to ensure that AI development is carried out responsibly through inclusive policies, ethical innovation, and in-depth research and talent exchange," said Meutya in her statement in Jakarta, Saturday.

Meutya said that Indonesia welcomes closer involvement with the Philippines in shaping ethical AI development.

"Together, we can ensure that digital transformation truly improves people's quality of life, strengthens democracy, and maintains the humanitarian values ??that we all uphold," she said.

In her remarks while attending the commemoration of the 147th Independence Day of the Republic of the Philippines in Jakarta, Meutya emphasized that the relationship between Indonesia and the Philippines is not only based on geographical proximity, but also on a long history of togetherness, similar cultural values, and aligned visions and ideals.

"As fellow founders of ASEAN, the two countries have stood side by side in fighting for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Southeast Asian region," she said.

She also touched on Indonesia's concrete contribution in supporting peace in the Philippines through the facilitation of the Jakarta Accord in 1996, as real evidence of bilateral solidarity that continues to grow.

She emphasized that Indonesia fully supports the Philippines in assuming ASEAN leadership in 2026, especially in navigating increasingly complex global challenges.

Meutya also shared a personal story that shows her closeness to the Philippines. For her, the Philippines is not just a close neighbor, but rather a very meaningful part of her life journey.

"My mother went through nine full months of pregnancy while in the Philippines, and because of that, I was called Bing at home—a very familiar nickname in the Philippines. My father earned his doctorate in Los Baños City," she said.
