The electronics company Oppo has established a partnership with the automobile manufacturer Volkswagen for the utilization of mobile technology patents. Through this agreement, Volkswagen is permitted to use Oppo's essential standard patents (SEPs), including those related to 5G connectivity.
According to a report by Arena EV on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, this collaboration marks Oppo's first bilateral patent licensing partnership with a vehicle manufacturer. As stated in a press release on Oppo's website, the company has filed over 113,000 patent applications and holds more than 62,000 patents globally.

Robin Cefai, the Head of IP Licensing at Volkswagen, described the collaboration with Oppo as an efficient partnership. This initiative focuses on business within the scope of essential standard patent licensing.

In the partnership agreement, Oppo licenses its essential standard mobile patent portfolio to the Volkswagen group. The agreement also includes Oppo's essential standard mobile patents, particularly those related to 5G connectivity, which will be licensed to Volkswagen to enhance the user experience of vehicles produced by the German-based automobile manufacturer.
