Tuesday, 08 Jul 2025

The Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, stated that the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, is currently en route to the United States (US) to continue negotiations regarding the reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Hasan elaborated that after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto to the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Minister Airlangga is now traveling to Washington, D.C., United States, to discuss the continuation of the 32 percent import tariff policy against Indonesia.

"The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs is on his way from Rio to DC. I contacted him earlier, and he is currently traveling from Rio to DC," Hasan stated in a press release at the PCO Office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Hasan further explained that the negotiation team from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs is already in Washington, DC, to continue the negotiations.

For your information, US President Donald Trump has decided to maintain the 32 percent import tariff on Indonesia, unchanged from the previously announced "reciprocal tariff" value in April, despite ongoing intensive negotiations with the Indonesian side.

The US import tariff policy for Indonesia, set at 32 percent, will take effect on August 1, 2025.

According to Hasan, the decision by the US Government to postpone the imposition of tariffs from July 9, 2025, to August 1, 2025, presents an opportunity for the Indonesian Government to engage in negotiations.

Hasan is optimistic that the long-established bilateral relationship between Indonesia and the US serves as a strong foundation for a smooth negotiation process.

"Our government is very optimistic about the negotiations. We also know that we maintain good relations with all countries, including the United States. We have had a very good relationship thus far. Certainly, this positive relationship can serve as a valuable social capital to continue discussions and negotiations there," Hasan stated.

On Monday (July 7), US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the leaders of Indonesia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Thailand to inform them about the new tariffs on their exports to the US, which will take effect on August 1, 2025.

The letter indicated that starting August 1, the US will impose a tariff of 32 percent on Indonesia.

In a previous opportunity, Trump also posted a statement on the Truth Social platform on Sunday (July 6), threatening to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on countries that support what he termed as the "anti-American policies" of the BRICS group.
