University of Indonesia (UI) social observer Rissalwan Habdy Lubis highlighted the recent rise in running services, or Strava jockeys. According to him, this phenomenon is closely related to the fear of missing out (FOMO). Strava is a web-based application and service designed to track and share sports activities, including running. "Strava jockeys are related to FOMO, I would say. So, these young people actually want to follow a healthy lifestyle," he said when contacted on Monday (July 14, 2025).
Rissalwan Habdy Lubis, the Strava jockey phenomenon currently attracting public attention, said Lubis, can be viewed from two perspectives. From the demand side, many young people are currently seeking validation or proof that they are living a healthy lifestyle.
"Many young people today need validation, recognition from others, as proof that they are engaging in healthy activities," said Lubis.
He highlighted that 80 percent of social media activity is not solely related to real-world events. Rissal believes that many people are now willing to manipulate personal details for the sake of social media content. "So, these Strava jockeys can also be categorized as content-driven," he said. Meanwhile, on the supply side, young people offering running services are typically physically fit individuals. They see a profit opportunity in the high demand for socially necessary services.
