Xiaomi Delays HyperOS Update After "Black Screen" Bug Found

Wednesday, 02 Jul 2025

Xiaomi is reportedly temporarily delaying updates to its HyperOS operating system on older phones after receiving reports of a bug that caused a "Black Screen" for some users.

This problem does not occur to many users, but Xiaomi does not seem to want to take risks and chooses to conduct a deeper investigation to find the cause of the bug.

As reported by Gizchina, Saturday (28/6) local time, there are two versions of Xiaomi's operating system that are being suspended for distribution to users, namely OS2.0.5.0.VLQIDXM and OS2.0.7.0.VLQMIXM.

Previously, both operating systems had been launched to some user groups as part of Xiaomi's typical gradual update approach.

After receiving reports of the bug, an investigation was immediately carried out by Xiaomi internally and at least two affected units were found to have undergone unofficial screen replacement or spare part repair by third parties that did not use official service components.

While other cases are still under further investigation and still have to wait for the examination to be completed.

This finding does not necessarily blame users who repair their phones with unofficial components, but it could have a significant impact on the problem.

This is because it is possible that the latest HyperOS tries to interact with the hardware to display the new operating system visuals but because of the incompatibility of the components, what ends up happening is a black screen problem.

However, until now Xiaomi has not released the results of its investigation and has not decided the cause of the problem for sure.

Technicians are still continuing their diagnostics to confirm whether there is a broader software-side vulnerability or whether this is really a hardware compatibility issue related to an out-of-spec fix.

For now, Xiaomi says they are taking a cautious approach. There is no complete halt to HyperOS development and pause the release of certain versions that have been identified as problematic.

The team is also working on improving diagnostics and advises affected users to contact official Xiaomi support rather than third-party repair shops.

This is also a reminder for mobile phone users that although third-party repairs are often faster or cheaper, they can have side effects that appear later, especially after major software changes.
