TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is reportedly working on developing its own Extended Reality (XR) glasses.
As reported by Android Authority on Monday (July 14th), ByteDance is reportedly taking steps to compete with XR device manufacturers like Meta.
This information was first reported by The Information, which stated that ByteDance is developing a lightweight XR device that will resemble glasses.
The glasses will reportedly be connected to a pocketable disc that will double as a power source and computing device.
In addition, the company is developing a custom chip that will minimize latency between what users see and their physical movements.
ByteDance has reportedly not yet finalized the design and specifications. However, the report compares ByteDance's glasses to Meta's Project Phoenix.
Both devices are also described as having a similar size and shape to Bigscreen's Beyond headset.
Beyond's Bigscreen is currently claimed to be the "world's smallest VR headset," with its latest model weighing just 107 grams.
The development is being carried out by Pico, ByteDance's mixed reality hardware division. Pico is reportedly seeking assistance from Chinese suppliers for the development of this new product.
Pico was initially tasked with developing a product that could compete with Apple's Vision Pro, but the company shifted its focus to developing lightweight XR devices after Meta began developing the glasses.
Separately, Meta is reportedly working on its own XR glasses, known internally as Phoenix, which are expected to have a similar appearance to their AR glasses, Orion, which were unveiled in late 2024.
