Officially Joins BRICS, Prabowo Says RI Continues Accession Process To OECD

Thursday, 20 Feb 2025

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia will continue the accession process to become a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) after officially becoming a full member of the BRICS alliance.

Prabowo said that currently the transition of Indonesia's full membership in the BRICS alliance is underway, where the organization consists of nine member countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

"There is also our international policy, namely that Indonesia joins BRICS, it has been stated that we are accepted in BRICS, yes. This is in process, the transition is underway," said Prabowo when announcing Government Regulation Number 8 of 2025 and other economic policies at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday.

According to the President, Indonesia's membership accession to join the OECD continues to be carried out as an effort that Indonesia does not side with any group or is non-aligned.

The President is also committed to Indonesia completing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with various countries so that trade tariffs can be eliminated or reduced.

"We are also continuing our registration with the OECD, and most recently we also want to quickly complete our Indonesia-European Union cooperation, CEPA as well," said Prabowo.

On a previous occasion at the 2025 World Governments Summit, President Prabowo reiterated Indonesia's desire to join as a full member of the OECD and other economic cooperation forums, such as the CPTPP and the Indo-Pacific Forum.

These cooperation forums are believed to prioritize the spirit of equal dialogue and avoid hostility.

For President Prabowo, Indonesia's stance is a reflection of Indonesia's free and active politics that does not side with a particular strong group, including groups led by the United States or China.
