Prabowo's Promise To Imprison Corruptors On Remote Islands...

Monday, 17 Mar 2025

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto plans to build a prison on a remote island for corruptors. According to Prabowo, the prison will be built in a remote place so that they cannot escape. He conveyed this when mentioning corruptors at the inauguration of a new mechanism for distributing ASN allowances at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Office, Jakarta, Thursday (13/3/2025) yesterday. "I will also set aside funds, I will build a very, very sturdy prison in a remote place, they cannot go out at night," said Prabowo at the end of his speech.

On this occasion, Prabowo said that corruption only leads to the destruction of a country.

According to the Head of State, no country is rich if there is corruption. The former Minister of Defense also emphasized that he is not afraid to face corruptors. "I will not back down when facing corruptors. They should understand that I am ready to die for this nation and people. I am not afraid of any mafia, I am not afraid," said Prabowo.

Lack of deterrent effect

This discourse is supported by the Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) Boyamin Saiman.

However, imprisonment alone is considered not strong enough to provide a deterrent effect. For Boyamin, corruptors must still be impoverished in order to be deterred. "Yes, I fully support it. Corruption must be imprisoned for a long time, in an isolated and impoverished place," said Boyamin when contacted, Thursday night.

Therefore, he considered the need for an Asset Confiscation Law. "So, I agree with the condition that, apart from being on a remote island, the Asset Confiscation Law must be passed immediately," he said. He is of the view that imprisonment on a remote island will not provide a maximum deterrent effect if corruptors are not impoverished.
