Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, especially in priority sectors through the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
"We will continue to promote the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through mutually beneficial cooperation in key sectors such as trade and investment, critical minerals, and electric vehicles and battery products," said Sugiono in a meeting with Wong in Sydney, Australia, Thursday.
According to a joint statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade received in Jakarta, Sugiono said other potential cooperation sectors are agriculture and food security, education and research, defense and security, and relations between the people of the two countries.
Sugiono viewed the meeting with Wong as reflecting the strong relationship between Indonesia and Australia based on shared values, respect for national sovereignty, and a commitment to advancing peace in the Indo-Pacific region and at the global level.
Meanwhile, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that mutual trust and strong friendship with Indonesia are excellent capital in spurring economic cooperation under the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
"Strengthening economic interaction with Indonesia is very important for both countries and is a key effort by Australia to diversify our economies through the ever-growing Southeast Asian market," Wong said.
According to the joint statement, Indonesia and Australia agreed to optimize the strategic partnership by advancing shared development priorities, strengthening people-to-people ties, and deepening cooperation in the field of regional defense and security. The two ministers then agreed to update the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the period 2025-2029 ahead of the upcoming leaders' meeting.
Indonesia's economic growth provides great opportunities for Australian businesses and investors, especially amid high demand for Australian consumer products and health and education services in Indonesia. On the other hand, Australia also noted an increase in Indonesian investment in the Land of the Kangaroos. In addition, Sugiono and Wong highlighted that the visit of a high-level Indonesian business delegation to Australia this week was a continuation of the visit of the largest Australian investor mission to Indonesia some time ago to explore the potential of Southeast Asia.
