The Indonesian government will take the path of diplomacy and negotiation over the tariff policy launched by the President of the United States (US) Donald Trump. Most recently, on Sunday (6/4/2025), the government held a virtual meeting led by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto regarding the US import tariff policy. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, the Minister of Investment and Downstream/Head of BKPM Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, the Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, the Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority Mahendra Siregar, and a number of Deputy Ministers and representatives of ministries/institutions.
In a press statement after the meeting, Coordinating Minister Airlangga stated that the Indonesian government would not take retaliatory or retaliatory steps against Trump's import tariff policy.
Indonesia is also taking the path of diplomacy and negotiation to find a mutually beneficial solution for both countries. "We were given a very short time, April 9, to respond. Indonesia prepared an action plan by considering several things, including imports and investment from the United States," said Airlangga in a written statement. Airlangga said the approach was taken by considering the long-term interests of bilateral trade relations, as well as to maintain the investment climate and national economic stability.
The government is also observing the potential impact of tariff policies on a number of labor-intensive, export-oriented industrial sectors, such as the apparel (clothing and equipment) and footwear industries. These sectors, said Airlangga, are considered vulnerable to global market fluctuations. "So the government is committed to continuing to provide support through various targeted incentives to maintain competitiveness and business sustainability," said Airlangga.
