Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is targeting economic growth by 2029 to reach 8% from the current level of 5%.
To achieve this target, one sector that can also support the increase in Indonesia's economic growth is the gas sector.
Deputy Chair of the Natural Gas Users Industry Forum (FIPGB) Achmad Widjaja said that Indonesia has actually been given a wealth of natural resources that can support this target. With these natural resources, an additional 3% economic growth is not difficult to achieve.
However, he emphasized that this must be accompanied by improvements in the governance of the energy sector in the country. Achmad assessed that in order to grow the domestic industry, the energy sector is one of the determinants.
"Because the non-energy industry referred to from PLN to gas must be carried out significantly so that its governance is truly felt by the industries that receive it, one," he told CNBC Indonesia in the Energy Corner program, quoted Thursday (10/4/2025).
Achmad said one thing that needs to be fixed is the allocation of natural resources including gas for both domestic and export.
"Natural gas in SSWJ or in Sumatra and Java is a substitute for the future if it is indeed slow and lacking and lost and whatever the term is called. The government has quite large reserves in the East, namely in Kalimantan and in Irian, Papua. Plus there are several 2026-2027 there will be all the problems, new plans will all be coming," he explained.
He said, if Indonesia wants to move towards industrialization, the use of natural resources must be planned for the long term.
"But if the continuity of now until 2030 if we do nothing, we will not achieve something that we will run industrially. Not to mention upstream to downstream," he added.
"This means that the government must pay attention to this condition starting today until the next five years when Prabowo finishes his term in the first term, at least we will see that there is a political promise that is truly carried out by this energy security," he emphasized.
