Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia and the European Union have achieved a major breakthrough in their decade-long trade negotiations. One key point in the agreement is the elimination of almost all tariffs between the two parties. President Prabowo made this statement after meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa in Brussels, Belgium, on Sunday (July 13, 2025) local time. "Thank God, we had a meeting earlier with the European Union, the Commission and Council, the President of the Commission, the EU Commission, and the President of the European Council," Prabowo told the media, as quoted in an official release from the Presidential Secretariat.
According to Prabowo, the meeting resulted in significant progress in the form of the completion of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Indonesia and the European Union that has been under negotiation for the past 10 years. "Extraordinary, a major breakthrough. After 10 years of negotiations, today we have achieved a breakthrough; we have resolved all the outstanding issues," he said.
Prabowo emphasized that the CEPA would serve as the foundation for a full free trade agreement (FTA). He called the elimination of almost all trade tariffs between Indonesia and the European Union a major step that benefits both parties. "Almost all our tariffs have been eliminated, almost all of them are at 0 percent between us," the President said.
